Why are quartz countertops so popular?

Quartz, also called “engineered stone,” is one of the hardest minerals on earth, thus when used as a countertop option in homes, it is arguably the most durable choice. Unlike other mined natural stone slabs, quartz is produced in a factory. Here are some other reasons people love quartz countertops:

  • They can be made in a variety of colors from bright red to lime green, as well as a popular brown, black and cream neutral colors.
  • Quartz is less likely to crack or chip in compared to granite or marble since it is stronger.
  • It is a non-porous material so it will not harbor bacteria in tiny cracks like other countertop materials.
  • It is resistant to stains so oil, juice, wine, tomato, coffee and more have no effect on the color.

What is the difference between quartz and natural quartzite?

Quartz is very different from natural Quartzite. Quartz is man made material, primarily made of 93% quartz agglomerate mixed with resins and binders making it strong & durable product. Quartz design & patterns are constantly evolving and becoming more & more realistic, with the advanced manufacturing technology. Quartz is designed to give the look of marble and other desired patterns, with very low maintenance.

Natural Quartzite is a metamorphic rock that starts as quartz-based sandstone. Quartzite has natural flowy, marble like unique patterns and colorations while being super dense and strong. As Quartzite is not as abundant, it usually starts at a higher price point. If you are looking for the beauty of nature, unique look & low maintenance, then Quartzite would be your perfect choice.

Is sealing marble necessary?

Sealing is definitely recommended because marble is a porous material, which means any liquids that come into contact with the surface tend to leech into the body of the stone. This can cause discoloration and staining.

Sealing marble can help make sure that materials remain on the surface of the marble until they’re cleaned off. This is the best way to retain marble’s original appearance for as long as possible. Talk to an expert about which sealer to use and how often you should reseal your marble. As always, read the labels of the products you plan to use, take necessary safety precautions, and follow instructions carefully.

Does granite stain?

Some colors may show signs of moisture if a spill is not cleaned up right away. Water left on a counter for some time may spot when the water is wiped up, but will then usually disappear when the granite is completely dry. Common staining liquids include liquid hand soaps, coffee, red wine and oil. If any of these substances comes in contact with the granite, wipe up the spill as soon as possible. For tougher stains, you can make a poultice of a fine absorptive non-acid cleaning powder, which should remove it.

Who should consider porcelain countertops?

Porcelain countertops produce clean lines with sleek fit and finish. If you like the look of marble, but are scared off by its brittleness and the fact it stains rather easily, then porcelain is an excellent alternative. Porcelain now comes in large format slabs i.e. 120” x 60” for large seamless applications.

The advantages that most stand out to many homeowners include the durability of the material, how easy it is to keep clean and the fact that it is very low maintenance since it requires no sealing or refinishing. If those are among your priorities for your next countertop project, then be sure to consider porcelain countertops.

Due to its lightweight & heat resistance characteristics, Porcelain becomes the product of choice for shower surround, fireplace surround & hearth, full height backsplash application & others.

On a practical note, if you have existing countertops that are in good condition and you want to reduce installation costs, then porcelain slabs installed over them is a money-saving option to learn more about when getting bids for porcelain countertops prices.
